How to Fix a Water Leak in a Refrigerator

Water leaking from a refrigerator can be a real hassle at home. It not only makes a mess but can also cause mold or damage your floor. Luckily, most leaks are caused by small issues that are easy to fix. In this guide, we’ll go over common reasons why your fridge might leak, simple steps to troubleshoot, and tips to help prevent leaks in the future.

 

1. Check Water Supply Line

Fridge leaks often happen because of faulty water supply lines or inlet valves. If you notice that your ice maker isn’t producing well or the water dispenser flow is weak, start by checking the water supply line. Before doing anything else, unplug your refrigerator and find a cool place for any perishables. Move your fridge away from the wall and locate the plastic hose that connects to the ice maker and water filter. If you see water dripping from the hose, it likely needs replacement as it's causing the leak. If you're replacing it yourself, remember to turn off the water supply before starting.

 

2. Check the Level of the Fridge

Another simple fix is to check if the fridge is level. An uneven fridge can cause water to spill from the drain pan. Adjust the fridge so it's level from side to side and slightly tilted toward the back. Use a level to ensure it’s balanced, with the bubble centered.

 

3. Check Drain Pan for Damage

Sometimes, a cracked drain pan can cause leaks, as water meant to evaporate seeps through any breaks in the pan. You’ll find the drain pan beneath the refrigerator, and it’s normal to see some water in it when you pull it out, so don’t be alarmed by that.

4. Check Defrost Drain

The defrost drain, usually found at the back of the freezer, can become blocked, especially when the freezer is packed full. When this drain is clogged, the coils have to work harder, causing condensation to build up, which can eventually drip down and create a puddle on the floor. To fix this, rearrange items to clear the drain area, then flush warm water through the drain to remove any blockages.

5. Inspect Ice Maker

A clogged inlet tube leading to the ice maker can also cause a fridge to leak. Start by unplugging the fridge, then remove the ice maker by unscrewing it and disconnecting the wiring harness. Use a hairdryer to melt any ice buildup in the inlet tube until the dripping stops.

 

6. Inlet Valve

The inlet valve at the back of your fridge controls water flow to the ice maker. To check if it’s the cause of a leak, turn off the water at the saddle valve and disconnect the supply tube. If water flows freely into a bucket, the inlet valve likely needs replacing. Unscrew the cover, remove the valve, disconnect the wiring and water lines, then install a new valve by reversing the steps. If there’s a leak, tighten the compression nuts, or replace the tube if needed.

 

7. Water Dispenser

If your water dispenser drips, trapped air in the line might be causing pressure buildup, forcing water to leak out. To fix this, try continuously dispensing water for about three minutes to clear the air from the line.
