Basically Ton use in weight which is equals to 100 kilo gram but in refrigeration system Ton is unit of  HVAC. Air conditioning tonnage has nothing to do with weight. A ton, as used in the HVAC field, is a term that describes how much heat the AC unit can remove from a home in one hour.

Ton of Refrigeration (TR) is an important historical unit of refrigeration capacity. Originally 1 TR was defined as the rate of heat transfer required to make 1 short ton (2000 lbs) of ice per day from water at 0oC. American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) defines 1 TR as equivalent to a refrigeration capacity of 3516.85 W or 3023.95 kcal/h. Tons of Refrigeration or simply Tons is often used as a general term to indicate the capacity or size of the refrigeration plant. Thus 1 TR air conditioner has a refrigeration capacity of 3516.85 W at the prescribed temperatures.

In another ways, Unit of refrigeration system is known as Ton of Refrigeration. There for One ton of refrigeration is amount of heat required to melt one ton ice within 24 hours at constant temperature zero degree Celsius. Size of air conditioner also measuring by Btu/hr, KW , K Cal .

Therefore, 1 TR = 12000 Btu/hr (In British Thermal Unit) 1 TR = 3.516 KW 1 TR = 3023.95 kcal/hr
